How long have you been a Vancouverite?
I’ve been living in Vancouver since 2004, so 11 years now. I left my hometown of Buenos Aires for Israel with only a suitcase when I was 19 years old. It’s been a long time since I left my country, but I am now proud (and lucky) to feel at home in three different countries.

Artist Jazmin Sasky paints with a purpose. “I didn’t want to do it just as a regular painter who [exhibits] in a gallery and gets commission, that was not the journey for me,” she said. “For me, it was more with meaning and helping and creating social effects, affecting life and people and donating the money... This project puts together all the values I believe as an artist.”

Her muse is 20th century Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo and painter, Jazmin Sasky’s folk art inspired clothing and bejeweled fingers recall Kahlo’s distinctive fashion. Sasky paints in the style of the Primitives; brilliantly detailed and textured with colourful flourishes. The eyes, truly the windows of the soul, are hugely expressive. Her narratives of multicultural women and children are always joyful because they are often wish fulfillments rather than portraits of their real lives.

Oakridge: Exhibit honours women

Jazmin Sasky wanted to celebrate her 10th anniversary of living in Canada by honouring the women she’d met in the her community. After interviewing 40 women, Sasky painted 14 large portraits that encapsulated the women’s personal stories. The results can be see in a new exhibit called Honouring Women: Every Woman, a Life Story to Tell, which runs at the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery, in Vancouver until Nov. 10.
